SC hands Maya a political victory over Amethi

New Delhi, September, 1 : The Supreme Court, which has been penalizing Mayawati over her obsessive memorial-building, handed her a massive political victory by clearing way for renaming of Amethi as Chatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar.

The apex court on Wednesday, Sep 1 set aside the interim order of the Allahabad High Court staying restoration of the district named after Dalit icon Chatrapati Shahuji Maharaj carved out of Amethi, a Lok Sabha constituency.

The ruling came on the grounds that a similar petition was dismissed by the High Court on Aug 11.

"Judicial propriety demanded that the High Court should have considered the final judgement of August 11. It could not have taken a different stand," the bench comprising of Justices R V Raveendran and H L Gokhale said.

The Mayawati-led Uttar Pradesh government had moved the Supreme Court against the Aug 18 interim order of the Lucknow Bench of the High Court.

The HC had passed the order on a petition filed by three people based on a specific embargo that no change in the boundaries that impedes ongoing census should take place.

This is a huge political victory for the BSP supremo as Amethi is Congress general secretary, Rahul Gandhi's constituency.

Incidentally, the SC ruling comes on the same day Rahul Gandhi visited his constituency.
